Psychedelic Assisted Therapy

‘This was one of the most profound experiences of my life’

Chris B.

Why I Became Fascinated by Psychedelic Assisted Therapy

I’ll be honest with you: psychedelic-assisted therapy was unfamiliar to me throughout my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. My introduction to its transformative power occurred through Michael Pollan’s enlightening book and the captivating Netflix series How to Change Your Mind’.

I was astonished to discover the efficacy, safety, and scientific substantiation of this therapeutic approach. Both from my own experience and from numerous clinical studies showcase, I realised its rapid and profound impact on an array of psychological challenges, from mild mental discomforts to severe disorders such as trauma, depression, alcoholism, PTSD, and OCD.

Motivated to share this novel approach with others, I pursued a specialised education in this groundbreaking therapy. After a year of intensive study at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute (USA), I am now one of the world’s pioneering certified psychedelic assisted therapists.

‘I don’t even know where to begin in describing my experience facilitated by Emma. I felt so nurtured and supported through the entire journey. Before our session we met to discuss my intentions and she asked precise questions and dug deeper so I could understand myself better and reasons for doing it. During the ceremony she checked in with me frequently and I felt so cared for that I fully trusted the process because of Emma. I can highly recommend the experience with Emma. It was simply phenomenal.’

What makes a psychedelic-assisted therapy so effective?

People come to me when they feel stuck in their ways of thinking or behaving. After a session people report being more open, connective and having an overall better understanding of themselves. It's like a fresh breeze of perspective. It enables you to safely break through repetitive and rigid styles of thinking, feeling and behaving. It allows you to connect and open up to thoughts and feelings that you may avoid in everyday life. You may feel a deeper connection with yourself, others and the world around you. Complex changes in brain activity occur after taking psychedelics. Within the safe setting of therapy, it has positive long term effects on treating depression, anxiety, addiction and many more mental health problems.

My Approach

  • Selection: before accepting you as a client, we jointly assess whether psychedelic treatment is a good match for you. There are a few contraindications for taking psychedelics: pregnancy, heart disease, high blood pressure, a diagnosis with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or a hereditary risk of one of these disorders. Always check with your physician if this applies to you.

  • State of mind: having the right intentions, preparation, mind set and state of mind is essential. During the intake and preparation call prior to the actual session, we assess what your intention is.

  • Setting: the setting of the session itself is crucial for a safe ceremony: who is there guiding you and where it takes place. A very important aspect of a safe setting is the therapist. I will be with you during the session holding space to be able for you to let go and feel safe. Music also plays an important role in a psychedelic journey. A playlist specifically designed for a psychedelic journey will be played, acting as a catalyst for deepening your experience.

Psychedelics are only effective and have positive effects if approached right. My approach is based on clinical research.

I call it the 3 S’s:

After the session: Integration

Integration is one of the most important parts of a psychedelic journey, which starts right after the ceremony. Integration is about embedding your insights in daily life. Integration takes place on 3 levels: emotionally, spiritually and physically. Integration is an important part of my program.

A Deeper Look: Different Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Modalities

Psilocybin Assisted Therapy

Psilocybin is the name of the active substance in certain mushrooms and truffles. The use of psilocybin is legalised and can be used for treating mental health problems and personal growth in general. Extensive research shows significant improvement after psilocybin assisted therapy for people struggling with a range of issues, such as:
Depression, Anxiety and Addiction

Psilocybin is fast becoming widely accepted as a safe and very effective method to address psychological issues.

Based on research, the US Food and Drug Administration has described psilocybin as a “breakthrough medicine”, Paul Statmets, CNN Health

MDMA-Assisted Therapy

I am also certified in MDMA assisted therapy, as provided by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). MDMA (short for 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) causes the release of neurotransmitters, chemical messengers to brain cells that change brain activity. They include “feel-good” hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, as well as oxytocin, prolactin, cortisol, and vasopressin. These feel good hormones can include feelings of:

  • Empathy

  • Self-awareness

  • Sensory pleasure

  • More energy

  • Less anxiety

  • Ability to open up about emotions

  • Differences in how you see time and space

MDMA for therapeutic use is not yet legalised. Currently MDMA is in the Food and Drug Administration’s phase 3 trial of approval for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Expectations for passing FDA approval is mid 2024. The European Medicines Agency is expected to follow suit.
